Welcome — what to expect
Using a hardware wallet like Trezor adds a physical layer of security that keeps your private keys offline and out of reach from malware, phishing sites, and remote attackers. This guide is designed for first-time users and will cover unboxing, initializing your device, creating a recovery seed, connecting to the Trezor web app, and keeping your funds safe.
Before you begin
- Make sure you are on the official Trezor website and start page:
- Use a clean computer — avoid public or shared machines. Ensure your browser and OS are up to date.
- Have a pen and the supplied recovery card (or a separate notebook) ready to write down your recovery seed.
Step-by-step setup
1. Unbox and inspect
Open the box and verify the tamper-evident seals (if present). Confirm the package contains your Trezor device, a USB cable, and the recovery card. If anything looks damaged or tampered with, contact support before proceeding.
2. Connect and open the web app
Connect your Trezor to the computer with the included cable. On your browser, navigate to and follow the prompts to access the official Trezor Suite or supported web interface.
3. Initialize the device
Choose create a new wallet when prompted. The device firmware will be checked and may prompt you to update — always install official firmware updates directly from the Trezor interface.
4. Write down your recovery seed
Your Trezor will display a 12, 18, or 24-word recovery seed on the device screen — NEVER on your computer screen. Write these words down exactly in order, on the supplied recovery card or a secure offline backup. Do not take photos or store the seed digitally.
5. Choose a PIN
Set a PIN using the device; this PIN protects the device if it is physically stolen or lost. Use a PIN that only you know and avoid obvious patterns or dates.
6. Verify and complete setup
Confirm your recovery seed by selecting words in the correct order when prompted. Once verified, your Trezor is ready to receive and send cryptocurrency securely.
